Why is Tampines called Tampines?

The name Tampines came from the Malay word for a ironwood tree found abundantly in the town, ‘Tempinis’. Tampines Town was the first to be developed on a precinct concept in 1979 (having neighbourhoods and precincts) for the promotion of neighbourliness. It also won a UN World Habitat Award for its town design in 1992.
