Wisdom and a flexible increase works for a huge number of options. Cleric, Druid, Monk, Ranger, Rogue, and possible even arcane spellcasters like Warlock, Sorcerer, and Wizard can work, though Clerics of Nature, Druids, and Rangers make the most sense thematically and will benefit the most.

My short answer is no. Variant human is not OP in my experience in games I have played. In terms of capability it probably ends up a bit above average in tier 1 depending on what feat you take but through tier 2 and into tier 3 and beyond the difference isn’t really noticeable.
