How long is 18E course?
Training for Special Forces Communications Sergeants consists of 60 weeks of formal classroom training and practice exercises. Some of the skills you’ll learn are: Physical conditioning, parachuting, swimming and scuba diving. Using land warfare weapons and communications devices.
What is an 18 echo in the Army?
The Communications Sergeant, or ‘Eighteen Echo’, is well versed in the use of all the various electronic communications systems used throughout the army. These include burst, wave propagation and cryptographic systems. They setup, operate and maintain FM, AM, HF, VHR, UHF and SHF radios and associated antennae.

The AN/PRC-126 radio is used primarily 2-way radio telephone communication among special force team members in the field. AN/PRC-126 Radio is currently used by US Army, USMC, US Navy SEALs, USAF CCT and other special forces.
How do you become an 18F?
- You first need to join SF. If you’re already in the Army, apply for SFAS.
- The you need to get selected in SFAS and pass the Q Course. In the Q Course, you’ll be given an MOS.
- If you get in, you’ll have to do the 18F school.
- Once you pass the school, you’ll be an 18F and assigned to a detachment.
