HyClone characterized fetal bovine serum (FBS) is produced using true pool technology, which minimizes bottle-to-bottle variability. This FBS product is filtered through three sequential 100 nm (0.1 µm) pore size-rated filters. Each lot of FBS is subjected to virus panel testing according to 9 CFR 113.53.

How does FBS neutralize trypsin?
FBS contains protease inhibitors particularly α1-antitrypsin, which inhibit the trypsin activity. Even before the addition of trypsin, cells should be washed with PBS to remove any left over FBS, because this could hinder the trypsinisation process.
What happens if you heat inactivate FBS for too long?
The longer you heat inactivate your FBS the more profound such undesired side effects will be. Thus your 2h treated medium could not be perfect any more. 2 hours at 56 °C could destroy the proteins of FBS that are necessary to support the cell growth ( they are cooked). Half an hour at 56 °C is enough.
