Can a 486rc2 be used as a tripod?

I use a Manfrotto 3121BPRO tripod with a 486RC2 head and have had no problems using this combo with a Tokina AT-X 828 AF PRO (80-200). This lens is no lightweight at 4.8 lbs (2.18kg). Obviously it wouldn’t hurt to go to the heavier duty 488 head but the 486 should work fine. As Craig pointed out, having the panning base might be worth the upgrade.
