got our CSA basket this week, and the cooler weather has been kind to this week’s produce….they look great!
part of our basket were 2 bunches of small RED carrots….gorgeous and CSA members Kim & Troy offered this tasty yet simple way to prepare them.

ingredients:
1 bag Melissa’s fingerling potato mix
1 bag Melissa’s pearly onions
carrots, rosemary, sage (if you have it),olive oil, pepper, salt (little bit), whole & crushed garlic, (herbes de provence optional)
set oven to 400 degrees. peel the onions (cut into big chunks if you have a large onion), & cut the carrots & potatoes into bite-sized pieces, peel the garlic cloves (note: measurements are based on preference). add the herbs, S, P, & some crushed garlic into a baking dish. pour in enough olive oil to cover the veggies (but not swimming!) & mix the dish (hands preferred). add to the oven to cook for 30 min (or until done), mixing it every 5-10 minutes. set out to cool and add a little more crushed garlic…you’re done!

a great side, but can also be tasty leftovers with eggs the next day. keeps for 3-4 days.
was given a link to a recent article in the Times concerning Long Beach’s water restrictions because of recent drought & dry weather.
For some reason, i thought we were still carrying on this behavior from the drought we had in 1990 (which personally, i don’t think we are out of), but i guess everyone else thinks that we are so now we are in a water crisis again. what i found most hilarious was how officials think that, “Southern California is in better shape now than during that drought because agencies have been aggressively storing water in recent years in reservoirs, which remain at healthy levels.”
Healthy compared to what, nothing at all? i can’t believe this, i just can’t. our population has been exploding in this state, and with the exception of a couple of years between now and 1990, i can remember a handful of really good rainy seasons. And i can’t imagine that most Californians have been watching their water consumption. We need to stop babying the people in this state, we have it the best out of most on the planet, and i don’t think it is too much to ask for

most of the people on the planet DO NOT have access to fresh water, i think we can start laying off the manicured and useless lawns.
Very very interesting article on the rising interest in Freegans: or people who basically live off of discarded, unused items as a way living an anti-capitalism life.

this doesn’t look too bad! and items like these are thrown away at alarming rates in this country.
well, my point is that i was talking to the friend who told me about the article and i am thinking about trying this out at the uber-whole foods! most postings to come.

super excited about the new line from Random Nicole!
now remember, these are the non-organic pieces from her upcoming line (we will be getting the natural tanks and tees which look uber-cute against the bright appliques and funky screen prints) . they should be on their way, i will post when we can put some on-line.
during the past weekend, my boyfriend and i were guests at an amazing fund raising gala for the Kids of Kilimanjaro, a local non-profit started by George Namkung and his incredible family.
Their mission: “To encourage, promote and foster an in-school meal program for the children of Tanzania”, as well as extracurricular and co-curricular activities for these children. Most, them have to walk for at least one hour to attend school, mostly without breakfast, school-time is where they have a chance at a better meal, and have a hope for a better tomorrow.

this family is simply amazing, running this organization after George, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and witnessed how much the children needed nutrition to stay in school. Since that first visit, 2 years ago, KOK has grown by leaps and bounds!! KUDOS…
my niece Nicole & i live together.
and we really wanted to do something together, a “collaboration” if you may. so we decided to make soy candles in rejected-thrift store glasses…we call our collaboration: family van
my father, way back when, used to take the 2 of us, in the back of his van- without seats around town and would roll us around with his crazy driving. we had so much fun…laughing at the sharp turns and stops…no thought of a seatbelt…really no thought in the world but rolling around like, “jumping beans” as he would call us.
my father has been gone for…gosh over 10 years now and those memories are dear..memories of him and laughing with Nicole…being silly and carefree.
we do this now with our candles: Nicole and i shop around for glass, and have a blast pouring melted wax, listening to music and sharing a bottle of wine (or a CSA margie)…talking of our family and laughing like we used to….we work it, but it is so much fun…the perfect occupation!

see family van in various forms at the store…please be warned, the good candles never lasts long!
welcome to Doie Designs, an East Coast line creating asian-inspired wears. Doie creator, Sara, created the line about 2 years ago mainly focusing on “lounge-wear” has recently expanded the Doie into dresses & blouses and boy are they lovely.

i am so impressed by how much Doie has grown! Each piece is constructed from bamboo fiber but is lined/accented with cute silk prints…exotic and modern!
We will be getting a few pieces from Fall 2007 in this month. Keep on the look-out for the Spring line too!
